📱 How to Make Your iPhone Wallpaper Look Actually Good in 4K
Why most iPhone wallpapers look blurry or washed out — and the 4 practical rules (resolution, aspect ratio, lock screen contrast) that fix it, plus free 4K sources.
Your wallpaper is the most-viewed image you own
You look at your lock screen dozens of times a day — more than any photo, app, or website. Yet most people settle for a compressed screenshot or a slightly-stretched image that looks fine in the store preview but muddy on an OLED display.
Here is what actually matters for iPhone wallpaper quality.
Rule 1: Match the real resolution, not "HD"
Modern iPhones render the lock screen at roughly 1179×2556 pixels (iPhone 15/16 class) or 1290×2796 (Pro Max). A "1080p HD" image stretched to fill that canvas is being enlarged by 2.4x — that is where blur comes from. Aim for images at least 1290px on the long edge, and 4K (2160px+) if you zoom or crop.
Rule 2: Keep the subject off the clock
iOS puts a huge clock at the top third of your lock screen. If your wallpaper's best detail lives there, it is permanently hidden. Compose so the focal point sits in the lower half, or embrace depth effect wallpapers where the subject intentionally overlaps the clock — iOS masks it smartly when the subject has clean edges.
Rule 3: Contrast beats detail for legibility
A busy wallpaper makes notification text unreadable. The trick used by designers: keep overall brightness consistent — either uniformly dark or uniformly light — and let one vivid element carry the design. Dark wallpapers also save battery on OLED iPhones.
